Afghan refugee, how do we show our support and understanding?
A young refugee came to our house today, he was a young, well mannered and courteous man who wanted a drink while he was delivering leaflets and we invited him. We are in Ireland. His English was limited to just a few words but he managed to tell us his mother and her baby had been murdered by the Taliban, he cried. I cried. It was the strangest of moments, he said thank you and went on his way. we know where he lives, he has nobody, no family, just a couple of other guys from Afghanistan who he works with. What do we do now? Is it inappropriate to drop in and say hi, how do we show our support without offending him. Is it interfering to try and get some locals his age to take him out? I would love to teach him English, but is that patronising?
