Question about the United States Navy?

What exactly does the navy do? I kno that they deliver suplies and etc to different locations. Are their lives in any sort of danger like Marines or Army soldiers? I was interested before but i wasnt sure about this because my parents dont want to join if its going to put my life in danger. Can anyone give me any type of information? thank you
