Can the really not refund?

i was away on hols and fed ex delivered a book, by the time i got back they had returned it to the manufacturers. i have now contacted them for the book or a refund and they say they no longer have the book but the can offer me credit valued for 3 months. its a publish your own book kind of thing so there is no book from them i want.
