DHL multiple failed deliveries - signing for delivery?

What happens when no one is home to receive a DHL package? The package is insured but I cannot be home when they try to deliver. Is there a place I can pick up the package after a certain number of failed deliveries? I hope it does not get sent back to the sender of the package. Does the package become property of DHL after a certain amount of time? What can I do to assure that I can pick up the package?
